History of Wilbarger General Hospital
Compassionately caring for YOU...
The need for an accessible medical facility had been recognized prior to the
creation of a Hospital Authority by the Vernon City Commission in September of
1964. The design and construction of Wilbarger General Hospital is the
fulfillment and the hope and work of many years and is shared by thousands of
residents of a wide section of Northwest Texas, with Vernon, Texas as the
center.
Months of study led to the creation of a Hospital District, coextensive with
Wilbarger County but as a separate political subdivision, with power to elect its
own governing board and to levy and collect taxes for construction and
operation of a General Hospital facility.
Governor John Connally signed a bill authorizing the voters of Wilbarger County
to create the Hospital District in February of 1965. A special election held on
April 10, 1065 created the Hospital District. Members of the City appointed
Hospital Authority were named by the County Commissioners Court as the first
Board of Directors to serve until the date of the next scheduled election.
On Saturday, May 8, 1965 issuance of $1,500,000 in tax bonds was approved by
voters for consideration and purchase of 25.236 acres of land facing Hillcrest
Drive in Northwest Vernon. Approval of a grant of Hill-Burton funds was
announced in December, 1965. Bids were in excess of available funds so a
second bond issue was approved.
The general construction contract was signed in April 1967 and ground was
broken on May 12 with the concrete foundation being poured on May 30, 1967.
The building of the hospital was completed and opened June 11, 1969 - the first
step toward the fulfillment of a dream.
Many changes, innovations, construction projects and alterations of the original
structure have been undertaken in the years since completion of the facility, but
our goals, mission, and vision have remained true to the original desires of the
citizens of Northwest Texas.
We continue to strive to remain patient oriented and service focused.
