New Nurse Practitioner Joins WG Medical Group

July 17, 2017

The Wilbarger General Medical Group has expanded, as family nurse practitioner Veronika Harris has joined the group and has opened a family practice.

Harris, a long-time resident of Lubbock, will be accepting new patients starting at the age of 3 months and up. She will be seeing patients in both Suite 700 and Suite 400 of the Doctors Clinic. The addition of Harris brings the number of members of the WG Medical Group to six, as she joins Medical Director Dr. Travis Lehman, surgeon Dr. John Lang, family practice physician Dr. Sesan Olotu, and nurse practitioners Kimberly Babb and Kelly Vasquez.

“I’m a country girl and I went to school to become a family nurse practitioner with the intent of providing family health care in a rural area,” she explained. “I say I’m from Lubbock, but I haven’t lived in the city for over 20 years. I actually live in Smyer, which is to Lubbock what Lockett is to Vernon.”

Harris graduated from South Plains College in Levelland with her associate degree in nursing and worked as a nurse for over 15 years before returning to school in 2014. She earned her bachelor degree in nursing from Lubbock Christian University, and continued on at LCU for her master’s degree and her family nurse practitioner degree.

After earning her associate degree in nursing in 1998, Harris began working for Covenant Health Systems in Lubbock.

“I wanted to continue with my education as soon as I earned by associate degree, but I was a single mom raising two kids,” Harris explained. “I needed to wait until my youngest graduated high school before I returned to school. My daughter and I ended up starting college at the same time. Me at Lubbock Christian and my daughter at South Plains, which made doing homework kind of fun because we were taking some of the same courses.”

While Harris was pursuing her education, she was also working as a nurse.

“I was born to be a nurse,” she said. “That’s all I have ever wanted to do. I can’t imagine being in another job. When I was getting my master’s degree some of my friends thought I was going to become an educator and start teaching, but that never crossed my mind. I can’t imagine being away from the patient.”

Once Harris decided to become a family nurse practitioner, her focus was on rural health care.

“Family nurse practitioners are vital to rural health care,” she said. “I love taking care of families and patients of all ages.

“I’m excited about what is going on at Wilbarger General and the growth that we have seen,” Harris continued. “There is such an opportunity here to develop a practice how I envisioned it, which is treating patients of any age for the health care needs that they have.”

Harris’ office hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as she works out of both Suite 700 and Suite 400 of the Doctors Clinic. For an appointment, call 940-553-2890.
